(1)

check whether f(x) is continuous at x=1

=> lim _ x|x^2 - 1| = lim _ x(1 - x^2) = 0
   x→1               x→1

   lim + x|x^2 - 1| = lim + x(x^2 - 1) = 0
   x→1               x→1

so,f(x) is continuous at x=1

check whether f(x) is differential at x=1

          x|x^2 - 1| - 0           x(1 - x^2)           -x(x-1)(1+x)
=> lim _ ---------------- = lim _ ------------ = lim _ -------------- = -2
   x→1       x - 1         x→1     x - 1       x→1      x - 1

          x|x^2 - 1| - 0           x(x^2 - 1)           x(x-1)(x+1)
=> lim + ---------------- = lim + ------------ = lim + ------------- = 2
   x→1       x - 1         x→1     x - 1       x→1      x - 1

so,f(x) is not differential at x=1

(2)

∵ f(x) is differential at x=a

            f(x) - f(a)
=> let lim ------------- = L
       x→a    x - a

                            f(x) - f(a)
=> lim [f(x) - f(a)] = lim ------------- * (x-a) = L * lim (x-a) = 0
   x→a                x→a    x - a                   x→a

=> lim f(x) = f(a)
   x→a

so,if f(x) is differential at x=a,then f(x) is continuous at x=a
